last year, when both
my best friend and i turned 30, we decided to treat each other to an
"experience", rather than buying something. an "experience"
just seems more fitting as we grow older, and also the fact that we really can
afford to buy whatever our hearts desire. a great "experience" with a
best friend can not be bought. so, for her birthday, i took her to kinky boots,
a show that she's been wanting to see, and for mine, we went to see if/then,
starring idina menzel - who was amazing live.
the show is about a
thirty-something woman named elizabeth who moved to ny for a fresh start after
her divorce, and meets two friends at the park: kate and lucas. kate suggests
that she goes by "liz" and stays in the park, and lucas suggests her
college nickname "beth", who leaves the park with lucas, and the rest
of the story depicts the two paths that elizabeth's life could take. life is
all about choices, and even though "liz" chose one, and
"beth" chose the other, the people in her life were the same, but
they played different roles.i thought the story was very well put together, and
made me think a lot about the what if's in life.
what if, what if my
family never moved to the us? what if i never moved to ny? what if i didn't
have all the relationships i've had in the past? what if i never met d? so many
questions, and yet no answers. in the story, we were able to see the results of
"liz" and "beth"'s choices, but in real life we are unable
to see the two sides to each decision we make. there are too many what if's in
life; i think it'll take a whole life time to ask and answer every questions!
if there is one takeaway from this story, it is that we should own up to the
decisions we make in our lives, good or bad, and not to ask the question of
what if. life is too short for that. we should learn from that decision and
take that learning and move on, so in the future we can make better decisions.
