dragons and zong zi.

this came up randomly, but when my coworker told me that he was going to chinatown the other day, he asked if i'd like anything. my first response was: zong zi. from time to time, i crave some real chinese food. it then daunted on me that duanwu (or dragon boat) festival is just around the corner! this year, it falls on saturday, june 20.

my mom would always remind me to eat traditional chinese food for each of the festivals (new years is tang yuan, moon festival is moon cake), but i never actually do. considering that we live in a predominately korean and japanese population, access to traditional chinese food is hard, less i go to chinatown. so, i knew that this was the perfect food to crave around the summer since it will be plentiful!

lucky for me, instead of the regular chinatown zong zi, i was brought some homemade ones, by my coworker's mother!! the zong zi was still warm when he brought it to work that morning, which means that it was just freshly steamed. i was beyond excited.

 homemade zong zi~!

now, since we don't have a microwave in the apartment (which is a good thing...prevents me from getting too lazy from eating frozen meals and D from popcorn...but an annoying thing when it comes to heating up leftovers!), and not being able to find out the vegetable steamer, i came up with a genius idea of steaming the zong zi!

ta-da! a chopstick and a pot of boiling water solves the problem.

there are different kinds of zong zi, depending on which region one is from, or if you want sweet or savory. since my coworker is cantonese, his mother had made a very traditional cantonese savory zong zi, filled with salted pork, chinese sausage, salted duck egg yolk, chestnut, and boiled peanuts. i had to whip out the angry lady hot sauce, and the meal was complete.

i originally only wanted half...but that didn't work out as planned...

it tasted like home, and reminded me of when my mom used to make zong zi at home for us. i have one more left in the freezer, waiting for D to come back home and enjoy. no watching the dragon boat races this year, but at least i have the food to celebrate the festival with, which is the most important thing!
