6 years ago today, my life changed when i decided to adopt two kittens. though i've thought about adopting cats, it was never serious, and more of a want to have companionship when i was living alone in brooklyn heights. i've been curious and have visited the petco in union square on various occasions to see the pets on adoption, but just never pulled the trigger.
until that one sunday afternoon, after brunch with a girlfriend on the uws, i strolled down to union square, and saw the most adorable pair of kittens. their names were mikey and lentil. i started the conversation with the adoption agency, kittykind, and started the process. before this, i knew nothing about how to take care of a cat, or any animal, but it almost came instinctively. i always knew that if i were to have a boy cat, i would name him jake. and of course what came naturally for a girl was jane.
i had to go back on monday to pick them up from the pet store and get all the supplies needed: litter box, litter, dry food, wet food, bed, and toys. somehow i was able to schlep everything into a cab, up the four flights of stairs and into the apartment. and there they were, my babies, in my apartment, and my life changed.
they have brought so much joy and love into my life, as well as fur balls, nasty poops, and the fact that i can't imagine life without them now. and how lucky am i that i found a man who they both love, and love them back.
meow.
